SUDAN
365 - The story
so far...
The 9 January 2010
marked the fifth
anniversary of the
Comprehensive Peace
Agreement between
North and South
Sudan and 365 days
from a landmark
referendum in which
Southern Sudan will
vote on whether
to separate from
the North. People
across the world
joined together
to launch the Sudan365
campaign, calling
for urgent and decisive
action to prevent
conflict and protect
the peace in Sudan
during this critical
year.
The ‘beat for peace’
- Sudan365 asks
global leaders to
coordinate, intensifying
their efforts to
prevent conflict
in Sudan. How do
we get this message
heard? By building
a global drumbeat
for peace across
every continent
to show that the
world is calling
for action.
A simple drumbeat
started in Sudan.
It travelled around
the world, picked
up by drummers in
South Africa, Mexico,
Brazil, Trinidad,
Rwanda, Japan, Ireland,
Australia, Ghana,
Egypt, France, Northern
Ireland, Dubai,
Spain, Russia, and
India. Famous drummers
from Radiohead,
the Police, Pink
Floyd and Snow Patrol
joined the beat,
as did Mustapha
Tettey Addy, Yehia
Khalil and Mohammed
Munir.
On 9 January 2010,
people in Mali,
Senegal, London,
New York, San Francisco,
Cairo, Togo, Sierra
Leone, Canada, Italy,
Norway, Turkey,
Kenya and Germany
came together to
join the beat for
peace. Their actions
generated headline
media coverage around
the world. As a
result of this massive
global day of action,
world leaders made
public commitments
to assist the Sudanese
find a peaceful
way through this
critical year. We
now need to hold
them to their promises.
What’s next? - The
beat for peace is
growing.
On 11 April 2010,
Sudan will hold
its first multi-party
elections in over
20 years. It is
an important part
of the Comprehensive
Peace Agreement;
however there are
fears that they
may bring an increase
in human rights
violations and violence
against the civilians
of Sudan.
Over this critical
period Sudan 365
activists from around
the world will be
coming together,
urging Sudanese
parties to uphold
their responsibilities
to the people of
Sudan and calling
on our world leaders
to fulfill their
promises to the
people of Sudan
by making sure that
there is no whitewash
of events on the
ground.
